What Is Montagu Famous For?

4 min read

Our lovely town of Montagu has a rich history and attracts thousands of visitors every year, being located on the notorious R62. Among the many attractions and activities, there are a few which springs to mind immediately upon hearing the town’s name. Below are the top 5 things Montagu is famous for.

1. Hot mineral springs

Perhaps the most popular attraction in Montagu is the hot mineral spring baths. The hot water flows naturally from a fissure in the rock face at the constant temperature of 43°C. The waters are even said to have healing properties and have been a popular resort to visit since the Victorian era. You can enjoy this natural phenomenon at our neighbouring resort, Avalon Springs, as a day visitor, or you can relax the day away in one of our three cold pools or one hot pool at Montagu Springs.

2. Delicious produce

Montagu is littered with orchards and vineyards, producing fresh and dried produce for the entire country, and even abroad. Montagu Snacks are a well-known dried fruit and nuts brand, with their farmstall located at 1 Long Street. Another well-known dried fruit and nuts store is Cape Dried Fruit Packers, which can be found at 102 Bath Street. Be sure to stock up on the delicious snacks before you leave town!

3. Incredible natural scenery and mountains

The town of Montagu is nestled along the R62 and is only accessible when driving from Cape Town by going through the gorgeous Cogman’s Kloof pass. This stretch of road encapsulates the natural beauty and tranquillity of the region. Surrounded by the Langeberg mountain range, Montagu is the perfect spot to enjoy nature to its fullest. Whether you want to spend the day lounging away alongside our pool or on the sprawling green lawns of Montagu Springs, or whether you want to go hiking and biking, our town has everything you could want and more. Montagu is also a great base for bird watching and snow spotting.

4. Artistic and cultural haven

Artists have long flocked to Montagu as a retreat or permanent residence. This, alongside the cultural significance of the town, has made Montagu an artistic and cultural haven. Art galleries abound, and the town is home to many heritage sites and national monuments. Explore the town by doing the history walk, or if you are looking for a more alternative way of getting to know Montagu, why not go on a ghost tour? Look out for the different architectural styles, as the town is home to buildings of the Art Deco style, Neo-Gothic style, Cape Dutch style, Edwardian style, and Victorian style.
